The magazine project is a collaboration of five designers designing a 32-page magazine about bakeries, taking place in Toronto due to our love for desserts and local knowledge about Toronto. Features include new bakeries, best and popular bake shops, recipes, an exclusive interview with a featured baker, and trends for the newest and best bakeries in Toronto

TEAM RESPONSIBILITY

We divided our roles across five responsibilities: Sarah created the brand identity and guidelines, Vivian applied them to the design, Sara Khan and I ensured consistency across all headers, subheadings, and body text, and Elianna handled print specs and technical requirements.

All team members individually designed a Rebel Refinery magazine ad, a 1-pager, and 4-page spreads relating to bakery and dessert shops. Since each designer has their own version and approach to composition, our critique days every month — exchanging feedback with teammates and classmates — became a crucial part of refining the work.

APPROACH

The colour scheme is warm and comforting – a deep chocolatey brown to vibrant terracotta red, beige and tan – evoking the aesthetic of a bakery shop. The typography builds on the sans-serif style: the Futura 100 family carries the headers and subheaders, while Aptos as body text compliments with the headers. Taking our demographic into consideration, the warm terracotta palette and homey and chill atmosphere makes for a welcoming, easy-to-navigate magazine for young adults who love desserts.

FINAL

A comprehensive guide to Toronto’s best bakeries that not only offers diverse options from well-known desserts to gluten-free and unique cultural sweet treats, but also helpful baking tips, delicious pie recipes, and an exclusive baker’s interview. My section explores baking tips about cookies and the top 5 donut shops in Toronto.
